This past Wednesday evening, refreshed by the sweet tropical punch and soft gingerbread cookies, I was graciously invited to attend the media call for Believe: A Christmas Musical which is a new Australian work of theatre pioneered by Mark Edmonds Productions, an up-and-coming professional theatre company with a well-established community throughout the greater Sydney region. Holiday magic filled the air of the Concourse Chatswood as we were welcomed local media for an exclusive preview of its new productionthat tells the origin story of Santa Claus. They offered an enchanting first look at a show that promises to become a cherished holiday tradition for audiences of all ages in the years to come. Furthermore, they paired it with a paperback book that follows the story of the show; written by Janine Edmonds and illustrated by Stephanie Edmonds.

Journalists and photographers were treated to a vibrant showcase of the musical’s standout moments which includedsoaring vocal performances and harmonies as well as high-energy choreography complimented by beautifully crafted and detailed costuming. All of this was brimming with festive warmth and theatrical sparkle, igniting excitement for the show’s upcoming premiere in The Concourse Lounge later this month.

Executive Producer & Choreographer Stephanie Edmondsshared her passion for the project: “Believe the Christmas Musical is an opportunity to share stories and celebrate the joys of Christmas. This belief is grounded in hope and the purpose within ourselves that we find.” This work has been a labour of love for Edmonds and her family for the past 6 years and bringing this to life with such an incredible group of cast and creatives has been a fantastic experience. The choreography from what was exhibited in the evening was nothing short of polished and filled with sparkle and personality, with each character fully embodying themselves through both movement and physical expression. What Edmonds hopes that this production will do is remind. Audiences from every walk of life that “we don’t have to worry… we can enjoy Christmas without a second thought knowing that what we do everyday is enough.”

Musical Director Matthew Hearne shared his insights into the joys of working with new music, arrangements and bringing the show to life through the amazing original score. “This show is comfortable and familiar whilst still being extremely new and exciting. Thus, it perfectly captures the essence and warmth of Christmas all wrapped up nicely in a show for all ages!”

Blending the clever storytelling with a stirring original score, Believe takes audiences on a musical whirlwind, from polka-esque comedic numbers, soaring ballads of hope and powerful ensemble pieces filled with love, joy and community; and that’s only the music that we heard tonight! The rest of the show promises an unforgettable journey of wonder, courage, and rediscovery. The media call offered glimpses of the musical, each number being performed with the signature artistry and energy that you’d want from a World Premiere of a brand new Australian piece of theatre.

The cast expressed their joys of being able to originate their own characters and be able to collaboratively work with production teams to craft these beautifully written characters that we come to know and love through the story. Knowing the labour of love that went in behind the scenes for these characters personally draws me more to them and allows that extra level of depth to be reached in their storyline.

Director Christie Koppe further emphasised her love for the creative vision and process of becoming, and that working alongside such a skilled production team and cast has made the whole process one jolly ride that audiences are sure to fall in love with!

Audiences can expect a breathtaking set pieces, immersive experiences filled with holiday cheer, and an original story that speaks to both children and adults alike wrapped in thewarm, joyful celebration of what it means to truly believe and the hope that comes with it. Get your tickets before they go and share the Christmas joy with your loved ones this holiday season!
