Who are you and what is your role in the show?:
Ebony Penman - Princess Jasmine Alana Kenn - Genie Zion Lallana - Aladdin
Tell us about yourselves!: Ebony: I have been doing musical theatre since I was 3 including dancing, singing and acting. I have been in many musicals since 2017 where I have performed 10+ musicals to this day. I mostly enjoy theatre because it allows me to express myself and entertain people with my passion of the arts. It gives me the opportunity to connect with others and to delve into a characters which creates space for me to explore more of musical theatre. Alana: I've been doing shows since I was 6 and since then have done a total of 16 shows.
I've performed with Fantasia Showstoppers for 3 years, being a part of the cast and the production team. Outside of theatre, I focus my studies at school, completing my HSC while rehearsing for "Aladdin". Being an all-CAPA kid, it is a heavy load, but somehow, I manage to juggle all my classes and memorise my lines for the show at the same time. I love performing on stage and being able to present myself way outside my comfort zone, while also bringing joy to those who come watch the magic of theatre come to life. Zion: This is the first show I’ve done. I like to play basketball and play the guitar outside of the theatre. I love singing and acting for hours on end.
What can audiences look forward to when they come to see the show?
Ebony: The audience should definitely be excited for all the songs as they are all upbeat and will be transported to the city of Agrabah. The audience will be blown away by all the talented artists in the musical.
Alana: Through the cast's hard work and dedication, they can look forward to seeing the magic of Disney come to life.
Zion: The choreographed dances and whole ensemble pieces because they are the most fun thing I’ve ever been a part of and seen.
How has the rehearsal process been?
Ebony: Great! We still have a month left until the show and we have finished the show already! Every rehearsal we are productive and get many things finished.
Alana: Rehearsals fly by so quickly, one minute you have just learnt your first dance and the first song, the next you are doing full run-throughs. It's been great to see the show put together and see how much work the production team have put in to make this show magical.
Zion: It has been the greatest experience, the people are fun and nice and our directors are the most helpful and nice people. They’ve been a joy to work with and my castmates are great fun too.
What do you like about the show? Why did you choose to be involved?
Ebony: Aladdin Jr is an amazing musical the be in. It explores the wonders of Disney and the magical romance and mysteries of the world. I chose to be in it as Aladdin Jr is a fun and entertaining musical that I really enjoy watching.
Alana: The Genie has always held a special place in my heart. It has been a dream role of mine to perform as the Genie ever since I did a dance to "Friend Like Me" back in 2016 as the featured Genie. I love how outgoing and full of life the character is, always being the centre of attention and an overall funny character to play.
Zion: I’ve always loved the story of Aladdin ever since I was a kid and I’ve always imagined myself singing his songs. He’s always had a relatability that I’ve connected with his charisma and cracking jokes.
Other than yourself, which cast member do you think audiences should keep an eye out for? Who is really bringing it?
Ebony: Definitely the Genie! The Genie is such a bubbly and hilarious role to play.
Alana: The audience should keep an eye out for our Jafar, Cameron. He has put in dedication and time into the character. It takes a lot for a performer to play the villain and Cameron is doing a spectacular job at it.
Zion: I have to mention these two every time, Ebony Penman and Alana Kenn. They are two extremely talented individuals who I am glad to be able to rehearse with all the time. Another cast mate I must definitely mention is our Jafar, Cameron Clarke. He plays the role perfectly and I can’t wait for people to see it. Lastly is Aria Yates, she is just a fantastic performer and I cannot wait for her show where she’s Aladdin.
What do you want the audience to think about? What is the message of the show?
Ebony: The message of the show is that no matter where you come from (rich or poor), loyalty, kindness and love will prevail. Have courage and stand strong for who you truly are no matter the rules or laws.
Alana: The audience should think about honesty, bravery, and the importance of staying true to oneself. Always remember to tell the truth before it is too late.
Zion: I think the message is to always be yourself. Because even if you think no one will like you for you, they most definitely will. Someone always will.
