In this NSW PREMIERE, an oracle prophesizes that the kingdom of Arcadia will soon lose its “Beat”—the mysterious, divine force that has allowed for Arcadia’s ongoing peace and prosperity. Join the royal family and their servants in this hilarious musical comedy as they attempt to save their kingdom…and find love and self-acceptance along the way. Head Over Heels will have audiences tapping their heels and jamming out to iconic hits like “We Got the Beat,” “Vacation,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” made famous by The Go-Go’s—the most successful all-female-identifying rock band of all time.

Names: Katie Vials and I play Pamela Gianni-Mia Attrill-Dowling and I play Philoclea Tell us a bit about yourself:

Katie: I have been performing music for over 15 years, playing guitar and singing at any chance I could. I also was a private music tutor for many years. I started performing in community theatre in 2017, with my first show being We Will Rock You. What I love most about theatre is the sense of community it creates by being able to share a common passion. Outside of theatre I read a lot, love to learn how to play new instruments, and travel.

Gianni- Mia: I’ve been doing theatre since I was 15 years old but have been surrounded by music since I could remember. I’ve just finished my diploma of musical theatre at Brent Street and am about to begin studying for my bachelors of musical theatre at the Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane! My biggest passion outside of Theatre is probably anything a bit nerdy, I love watching TV shows and movies and playing all sorts of games from board games and video games to DND.

What can audiences look forward to when they come to see the show?

Katie: Head Over Heels not only has catchy 80s songs, but also a meaningful, heartfelt story of love, self-identity, and inclusivity. Audiences can look forward to a vibrant, high-energy experience where you will be laughing hysterically one minute and maybe shedding a tear or two the next. But I can promise your heart will feel full by the end.

Gianni-Mia: This show is so silly and fun. I think anyone who comes can really enjoy the humour. All the leads can sing the house down so that will also be something to look out for. I think meeting Musidorus’s sheep is the best part though.

How has the rehearsal process been?

Katie: I have had the absolute time of my life and look forward to every rehearsal. Being able to see this cast so often, I am going to be truly sad when this is over! The positive environment is not only thanks to this cast, but also the dedicated production team who have put their entire selves into this show. They have made this process so encouraging and collaborative, and you can see that they genuinely enjoy what they do. They are the driving force behind making this show everything it’s meant to be – and I am beyond grateful to be a part of it.

Gianni-Mia: The rehearsal process has been immensely enjoyable and that’s all to do with the people. Everyone is so kind and gives it everything they have. Couldn’t imagine doing it with anyone else!

What do you like about the show? Why did you choose to be involved?

Katie: I fell in love with Head Over Heels the minute I started listening to the soundtrack… but then I fell in love with it even more once I watched the Broadway choreography… and then I fell in love with it even more once I dug deeper into the story, realising how meaningful and impactful it is. So there was nothing stopping me from wanting to audition and it has now become one of my favourite shows. Now I can confidently say our choreography, musicality, and staging are better than the Broadway version that I fell in love with, and I cannot stress enough to anyone and everyone who will listen that they have to see this show so they can love it as much as I do.

Gianni-Mia: I auditioned very last minute after listening to the sound track. I fell in love with Philoclea’s character and felt really personally connected to her as I’m also a younger sister! Regardless I was also excited to work with Chelsea and Emma having met them in another show!

Other than yourself, which cast member do you think audiences should keep an eye out for? Who is really bringing it?

Katie: There are so many, I could speak about everyone individually for hours. But everyone just HAS to come see our dancers. From the minute those curtains open, they bring non-stop energy, and I am constantly in awe of them.

Gianni-Mia: I don’t think it’s fair to say there is just one. Katie (Pamela) will win you over with her powerhouse voice. Grace has such great energy on stage as Mopsa. Ben really is a triple threat which you don’t expect from a kingly role as Basilius. Annette has such wonderful presence and truely is a fiercely independent woman. Pythio is played by Holly who offers such an interesting and thoughtful take on the character. Paul has a real sense of guidance to our story being the ever important Dametas and lastly, Will plays Musidorus who I think is the glue in our story!

What do you want the audience to think about? What is the message of the show?

Katie: This show is about embracing who you truly are, no matter how unconventional or unexpected it may be. It shows that everyone deserves to love and be loved. I hope audiences leave the theatre feeling uplifted, inspired to be their authentic selves and accept others for being their authentic selves… and I also hope they leave dancing a little!

Gianni-Mia: I want the audience to walk away at least having a good time and a giggle. If you feel so inclined as to follow the message of the show then acknowledge that changing and shifting is a beautiful part of life and that growth comes in many ways.
